Protest Impact Clarification
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has reassured the public that the recent protests by Organised Labour at the Abuja and Lagos airports will not disrupt the scheduled governorship elections in Kogi, Bayelsa, and Imo States.
Rotimi Oyekanmi, the Chief Press Secretary to the INEC Chairman, emphasized that the protests, sparked by the assault on Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) President, Comrade Joe Ajaero, are not aimed at the elections.
Labour Protest Details
Members of Organised Labour had on Thursday staged protests at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja, blocking entry and exit points to express their grievances. The military and other security agencies intervened, preventing the protesters from entering the airport.
INEC’s Stance and Urgent Resolution Call
Oyekanmi, in an interview with Daily Trust, affirmed that the NLC strike is not intended to disrupt the governorship elections.
He urged the federal government and the NLC to promptly resolve their differences through dialogue.
While acknowledging the ongoing strike, he expressed confidence that the elections in the three states will proceed as scheduled.
Material Delivery and Election Readiness
Addressing the state of preparedness, Oyekanmi highlighted that both non-sensitive and sensitive materials required for the elections have been delivered to the respective states.
He further informed that the distribution of sensitive materials is currently underway at the premises of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) branches in the three states.
Assurance of Election Continuity
With the assurance from INEC, concerns about the potential impact of the labour protests on the electoral process in Kogi, Bayelsa, and Imo States are addressed.
The electoral commission remains focused on ensuring the smooth conduct of the governorship elections.
