The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) is facing intense scrutiny for not disclosing the details of Huw Edwards’ child pornography charges.
The 62-year-old former News at Ten presenter is set to appear in court in central London today.
He has been accused of sharing 37 indecent images in a WhatsApp chat.
Though he was charged in June, the specifics of the charges only came to light on Monday, after the Westminster Magistrates’ Court announced his first court appearance date.
A former attorney general expressed confusion over the CPS’s decision not to publicize the charges when they were initially filed. According to The Telegraph, he remarked that this move seemed inconsistent with the principles of open justice.
In response, the CPS denied any intention of withholding information or showing preferential treatment.
A spokesperson stated that decisions regarding charging announcements are influenced by operational factors, asserting that their handling of Edwards’ case adhered to standard procedures.
Personal Turmoil Amid Legal Issues
Adding to the turmoil, Edwards has reportedly separated from his TV producer wife, Vicky Flind, and moved out of their family home ahead of his court hearing.
The couple, who have three sons and two daughters, had been living in Dulwich, south London. Edwards is now said to be splitting his time between Wandsworth, south-west London, and his native Wales.
According to a source quoted by The Sun, their separation happened some time ago but was not publicly announced.
The Allegations and Arrest
Edwards is facing three counts of making indecent images of children, with the offences allegedly occurring between December 2020 and April 2022. Scotland Yard revealed this information recently.
A former colleague and friend mentioned that Edwards had kept his arrest a secret, even though many believed that the investigation had ended without any evidence of criminal activity.
The friend was unaware of the arrest until Edwards was formally charged.
BBC’s Reaction
The BBC was reportedly caught off guard by the charges against their former star presenter. Insiders claim that the corporation learned about the allegations only hours before they were made public.
In April, Edwards resigned from the BBC for medical reasons, moving in with his mother in Wales without receiving a payout.
However, it has since been revealed that he was arrested on November 8 last year and charged on June 26, following the CPS’s authorization.
A senior source confirmed that the BBC was informed of the charges by the Met Police through a call on Monday, leaving staff members in shock.
