…By Lola Smith for TDPel Media. Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State has raised serious allegations against the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led federal government, accusing them of engaging in political gamesmanship by neglecting the maintenance of Federal Roads in Edo State.
This accusation comes in the wake of a viral video showing the governor’s convoy getting stuck in a flooded section of the Benin-Sapele road.
In a statement made by Obaseki’s Special Adviser on Media Projects, Crusoe Osagie, on Sunday, he expressed concern over the deplorable condition of major Federal Roads in Edo State, which serve as vital transportation links connecting various parts of the country.
These roads, including the Benin-Sapele Road, Benin-Agbor Road, Benin-Auchi Road, and the Benin-Lagos Road at Ovia River Bridge, are in urgent need of repair and rehabilitation.
Osagie highlighted that Edo State is a crucial transportation hub, and it is disheartening that the roads in the region, which contribute significantly to the nation’s oil resources, have been left in such a sorry state.
He noted that communities have repeatedly protested against the poor road conditions, and the state government has consistently called on the Federal Government to take swift action in addressing the situation.
The Governor’s aide mentioned several instances where Governor Obaseki had urged the Federal Government to intervene and fix these roads, citing the dangerous conditions they posed, leading to insecurity and tragic accidents resulting in loss of lives.
The State Government had even sought permission to carry out temporary repairs on the roads, but the efforts were rejected by the APC-led Federal Government, claiming that contracts for the repairs had already been awarded.
Political Motives Behind the Delay
Osagie pointed out that it is evident that the cries for help in fixing these critical roads have fallen on deaf ears due to political considerations.
He accused the APC-led federal government of deliberately stalling the road repairs to boost the image of their comatose state chapter, especially as the governorship elections in the state are approaching.
The Governor’s aide expressed frustration at the APC and its social media supporters for falsely accusing the Edo State Government of neglecting the roads.
He emphasized that the people of Edo are well aware of the significant progress made under Governor Obaseki’s leadership and cannot be swayed by political propaganda.
A Plea for Urgent Action
In conclusion, Osagie implored the Federal Government to set aside political games and prioritize the well-being of Nigerians by swiftly mobilizing contractors to repair and rehabilitate the dilapidated roads.
He stressed that the hardship and trauma faced by citizens due to the poor road conditions must be addressed urgently, as the safety and livelihoods of people are at stake.
