Golf Basics 101

Golf is a sport that has been around for centuries and is enjoyed by people of all ages. Though it may seem like a simple game, there is quite a bit of technique and strategy involved in playing. If you’re new to the game, or are looking to brush up on your skills, this Golf Basics 101 guide is for you!

Golf Basics for Beginners

The following basics will help you as a beginner to learn about the golf game:

1. The Objective of the Game

The objective of golf is to use as few strokes as possible to hit the ball into each hole. There are 18 holes on a regulation golf course, and the average number of strokes per hole is called the player’s “score.” The player with the lowest score at the end of the 18 holes is the winner.

2. Terminology

There are many terms associated with golf that can be confusing for newcomers to the sport. Here are some of the most common terms you’ll hear while playing:

Tee: This is the starting point of each hole, where players tee off. Teeing off simply means hitting the ball from this elevated platform.

Fairway: The fairway is the area between the tee and green that is well-manicured and thus ideal for hitting the ball.

Rough: The rough is the area outside of the fairway that is not as well-manicured, and usually has longer grass. Hitting the ball into the rough can make it more challenging to reach the green.

Bunker: A bunker is a sand trap that can be found either in the fairway or near the green. These traps make it difficult to hit the ball out, and often result in a one-stroke penalty.

Green: The green is where players want to end up after teeing off. Once on the green, players put in attempt to get their ball into the hole.

Hole: The hole is simply a cup cut into the green into which players try to sink their ball.

Par: Each hole has a par, which refers to the number of strokes it should take an average player to complete that hole. For example, if a hole has a par of 4, it should take an average player 4 strokes to complete it.

2. Rules & Etiquette

Now that you know some basic golf terminology, it’s time to learn about some standard rules and etiquette so that you can play like a pro! Just keep the following in mind:

  • Players should take turns teeing off at each hole (the person with the lowest score from previous holes tees off first).
  • If your ball hits another player’s ball, there is no penalty as long as that player was not actively trying to interfere with your shot.
  • It is considered polite golf etiquette to fix any divots (chunks of turf) that you might hit while swinging, as well as any ball marks on greens.

During the game, a pro-putting mirror can help golfers analyze their putting stroke and improve their performance. Golf training mirrors can help golfers with their swing, alignment, and posture.
