The Gauteng Traffic Police have urged motorists to use caution on the roads, especially in the aftermath of heavy rains that caused flooding in many parts of the province on Friday evening, 4 February 2022.
Due to the weather, certain key highways have been rendered unusable and unsafe to travel. As a result of the floods, residents have been rendered homeless.
Images and videos of the intensity of the floods have been circulating on social media, particularly in Centurion, where automobiles and some infrastructure were submerged in water.
The cities of Tshwane and Ekurhuleni have been working hard to rescue people and assess the extent of the damage caused by the floods.
“We call upon road users particularly drivers and pedestrians to be vigilant and exercise care on our roads especially during these rainy conditions.
Motorists are advised to maintain a safe following distance at all times.
If visibility is hampered due to heavy rainfall, motorists are advised to switch on their head lamps and hazards,” said Gauteng Traffic Police Spokesperson Sello Moerane.
The Gauteng Traffic Police have urged motorists to avoid these areas as they have been affected by the floods:
-Tsamaya Road in Mamelodi next to Eerste Fabriek informal settlement
-Centurion (including corner Rabie and End street, Irene Farm, Supersport Park, Lenchen Avenue, Old Johannesburg Road next to Wierdabrug police station)
-The N12 Impala Road and Avalon
“There is also a need to adhere to the prescribed speed limit and continue avoiding heavily flooded areas by making use of alternative roads.
The Gauteng Traffic Police will be on high alert on the major routes to ensure the safety of road users,”
