Commendation for University Autonomy

Kingsley Moghalu, former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), lauded the decision made by President Bola Tinubu’s government to exempt universities and polytechnics from the Integrated Personnel Payroll Information System (IPPIS).

In a post on his official handle, Moghalu emphasized the importance of autonomy for Nigerian universities while advocating for their effective regulation.

University Employees Not Civil Servants

Moghalu underscored the distinction between university employees and civil servants, asserting that those working in universities are not akin to civil servants.

His tweet emphasized the necessity for universities to maintain autonomy while ensuring effective regulation, supporting the move to remove universities from the IPPIS payment platform.

Government’s Decision on IPPIS

Earlier reports from Naija News highlighted the Federal Government’s decision to exclude universities and other tertiary institutions from the IPPIS payment platform.

Education Minister Tahir Mamman revealed that the Federal Executive Council (FEC), chaired by President Tinubu, made this decision during a cabinet meeting held at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

Relief for Education Institutions

Minister Mamman indicated that the heads of these educational institutions have received relief, allowing them to conduct recruitment exercises without needing approval from the Head of Service of the Federation.

Additionally, the president’s directive to remove Vice Chancellors from the payroll system aims to streamline recruitment processes and ensure efficient management within these educational entities.
