Former Bafana Bafana Defender Matthew Booth Discusses the Rising Trend of South African Footballers Returning to the Betway Premiership from European Leagues

Former Bafana Bafana and Mamelodi Sundowns defender, Matthew Booth, has recently weighed in on a notable trend: South African players returning to the Betway Premiership after stints abroad.

For many South African footballers, making a mark in Europe’s top leagues has always been the ultimate goal.

Currently, we see a few local stars, such as Lyle Foster, Sphephelo Sithole, Gift Links, Luke Le Roux, and Luther Singh, making significant strides overseas.

The Pull of Home

Lately, though, the charm of home is drawing some of these players back.

For instance, Tashreeq Matthews, who previously played with IK Sirius in Sweden, joined Mamelodi Sundowns in January.

The team didn’t stop there; they also secured Kobamelo Kodisang from Portugal’s Primeira Liga.

Meanwhile, former Leicester City midfielder Khanya Leshabela had a short loan spell with Cape Town City FC before moving on.

Another noteworthy returnee is versatile midfielder Keanin Ayer, who is now training with SuperSport United after leaving Danish 1st Division side Næstved Boldklub.

Matthew Booth’s Take on the Situation

Booth expressed mixed feelings about this trend.

He admits it’s a bit disheartening to see players leave European leagues to come back to the DStv Premiership, but he also emphasizes that each player’s situation is unique.

“It’s disappointing when players return to South Africa, but every player has their own reasons for coming back,” Booth shared with FARPost.

“We need to understand that not everyone’s circumstances are the same, and we shouldn’t judge them harshly.”

He acknowledges the strong appeal of returning home to teams like Sundowns, citing factors like financial incentives and the desire to win trophies as major draws.

“In an ideal world, we’d prefer our players to stay abroad, even if it’s in the second-tier leagues,” Booth added.

“That’s where they can truly develop and enhance their skills.”
