…By Roland Peterson for TDPel Media. During a business robbery at an energy depot in Piet Retief, Mpumalanga, three suspects between the ages of 30 and 47 were caught in the act of stealing fuel.
The incident took place on Wednesday, June 21, 2023, around 23:00.
Police Respond Swiftly to Business Robbery Complaint
Brigadier Selvy Mohlala, the spokesperson for the South African Police Service (SAPS) in Mpumalanga, reported that police in Piet Retief received a complaint regarding an ongoing business robbery.
Responding promptly, the police arrived at the scene and discovered the suspects draining diesel from a depot tanker into a truck.
Employees Tied Up, Suspects Attempt to Evade Arrest
According to the incident report, four employees were found tied up with shoelaces and locked in a guard room.
As the police approached, five suspects noticed their presence and attempted to escape.
However, two of the suspects were apprehended on the spot by the pursuing officers.
Police Pursuit Leads to Third Suspect Arrest
The police continued their pursuit of the remaining suspects and successfully apprehended the third individual.
The suspect was cornered while driving a VW Polo with Lesotho registration plates, approximately 30 kilometers before Ermelo.
During the arrest, a licensed firearm was found in the suspect’s possession and confiscated for further investigation into potential links to other crimes.
Truck Identification Numbers Altered, Investigation Underway
Upon further investigation, the diligent officers discovered that the identification numbers on the truck used by the suspects had been filed off.
The police are currently conducting an investigation to determine the owner of the truck.
Charges Filed and Ongoing Investigation
The three arrested suspects have been charged with business robbery and possession of suspected stolen property.
As the investigation progresses, additional charges may be added.
The police are actively working to establish any connections these suspects may have to other crimes committed in the country.
