Nigeria’s Mobile Courts for Sexual and Gender-Based Violence Cases
The Federal Government of Nigeria has unveiled plans to introduce mobile courts specifically tailored to address cases related to Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) and related offenses within the country.
This initiative reflects the government’s commitment to combat the pressing issue of SGBV, emphasizing the need for swift and effective justice.
Ministry of Women’s Affairs Leading the Effort
The Ministry of Women’s Affairs is spearheading this endeavor, underscoring its dedication to tackling sexual and gender-based violence.
During a press briefing held in Abuja, the Minister of Women Affairs, Uju Kennedy-Ohaneye, shed light on the importance of establishing these mobile courts as a critical step in advancing the fight against SGBV.
Enhancing Advocacy and Justice
The introduction of mobile courts for SGBV cases is expected to significantly enhance advocacy efforts against such offenses. Minister Uju Kennedy-Ohaneye explained that when victims report incidents, the police will initiate arrests, and the victims will receive immediate medical attention for confirmation of their injuries.
Subsequently, the mobile courts will play a pivotal role in ensuring that justice is served swiftly and effectively.
Sustainable Empowerment for Women
Beyond addressing issues of SGBV, the Ministry of Women’s Affairs is committed to sustainable empowerment projects that benefit women and children across the nation.
Minister Kennedy-Ohaneye emphasized the shift in the ministry’s approach towards initiatives that have a lasting impact.
Instead of periodic distribution of sanitary towels, the ministry is exploring the establishment of sanitary pad production ventures.
Similarly, the focus is on providing practical solutions like charcoal burners and biogas stoves to rural women, promoting self-sufficiency beyond initial government support.
A New Direction for Empowerment
The Ministry of Women’s Affairs recognizes the need for a paradigm shift in empowering women and children.
By prioritizing sustainable ventures and projects, the ministry aims to create lasting change that positively affects the lives of women and children throughout Nigeria.
This shift in approach is poised to bring about more substantial and enduring results in the quest for women’s empowerment and gender equality.
The establishment of mobile courts for SGBV cases and the commitment to sustainable empowerment initiatives mark significant steps forward in addressing critical issues and improving the lives of women and children in Nigeria.
