…By Enitan Thompson for TDPel Media. Unrest has engulfed the Idoani community in Ose Local Council Area of Ondo State since Monday, following the lynching of a Naval Rating.
Reports indicate that the incident occurred when the Naval officer inadvertently splashed water on a motorcyclist and his passenger while maneuvering around potholes on a deteriorated road in the community.
Upon realizing his mistake, the officer promptly exited his vehicle and apologized to the affected individuals.
Plea Ignored, Mob Attack Ensues
Despite the Naval officer’s sincere apology, the motorcyclist reportedly disregarded his plea and quickly mobilized a group of thugs within the community to attack the officer.
The mob, consisting of numerous individuals, descended upon the officer, leaving him unconscious.
He was rushed to a nearby hospital but tragically passed away before reaching it, as confirmed by the attending doctor.
Tension and Search for Justice
News of the incident has sparked tension within the community, as colleagues of the deceased officer have allegedly expressed intentions to avenge his death.
Consequently, apprehension has gripped the area, leading some residents to flee into the bush out of fear of potential reprisals.
At the time of reporting, fellow Naval personnel were in the vicinity actively searching for the perpetrators responsible for the fatal assault.
Arrest Made, Main Suspect at Large
The motorcyclist involved in the incident has been arrested by the community’s police and is now in custody.
However, the primary suspect, who allegedly struck the Naval officer with a rod, managed to evade capture and has fled the scene.
The Ondo State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Funmilayo Odunlami-Omisanya, confirmed the incident and assured reporters of providing further details in due course.
Prior Attack and Background
This recent attack on a Naval rating in Ondo State occurred within forty-eight hours of a similar incident where an unidentified Naval rating was killed by unknown gunmen in the Ajegunle area of Lagos State.
The deceased Naval officer had been stationed at the Lagos Logistics Depot of the Nigerian Navy until this tragic event unfolded.
The consecutive attacks on Naval personnel have raised concerns and demand swift action to apprehend the culprits and restore peace within the affected communities.
