Family Seeks Justice for Beaten-to-Death Victim in Jos
The family of the late Fwimbe Thomas, who tragically lost his life in a brutal mob attack in Jos, Plateau State, has come forward to demand justice for their loved one.
This incident, which involved an angry mob wielding sticks and stones, occurred in the north-central region of Nigeria and has left the family in anguish.
Recalling the Tragic Incident
The incident, which went viral on social media, took place on September 26, 2023, and led to the untimely death of Fwimbe Thomas, who was only 35 years old at the time.
The family is now grappling with the painful loss of their beloved relative.
Brother’s Account of the Tragedy
Wakbul Thomas Gofwan, the immediate elder brother of the deceased, spoke to the BBC and provided a harrowing account of how his younger brother met his demise.
He characterized the events surrounding the death as “Jungle misbehavior” rather than “Jungle justice.” He emphasized that there was nothing just or lawful about the manner in which his brother was killed.
Details of the Attack
According to Wakbul, they were informed that Fwimbe was brutally beaten by a mob who chanted “barawo barawo” (meaning “thief” in the local language). This prompted bystanders to join in the assault until Fwimbe collapsed and lost his life.
The intensity of the beating was akin to how thieves are often dealt with.
Unjust Accusations
Wakbul expressed his disbelief and frustration over the accusations leveled against his late brother.
Fwimbe was accused of stealing the vehicle he was driving at the time of the incident, even though he had been using the same bus for the past two years.
The vehicle’s documentation, including receipts and registration numbers, bore his name, making the accusations all the more perplexing.
Promising Future Cut Short
The grieving brother also revealed that Fwimbe had plans for the future, including purchasing land and embarking on a project alongside his upcoming wedding, scheduled for the next year.
He had spoken to Fwimbe just hours before the tragic incident occurred.
A Painful Loss for the Family
Thomas Fwimbe was the youngest of six siblings in his family, which included his parents.
His death has left an irreplaceable void in their lives.
Wakbul expressed the deep pain and sorrow the family is enduring during this challenging time.
Police Investigation and Assurances
Meanwhile, the Plateau State Police Command has pledged to apprehend those responsible for Fwimbe Thomas’s death.
Police spokesperson Alabo Alfred assured the public that efforts were underway to bring the perpetrators to justice.
The state police commissioner has also called for calm in the wake of this tragic incident.
Background of the Incident
Reports from the police indicate that the victim accidentally scratched a motorcycle rider with his vehicle while returning home after work.
This seemingly minor incident triggered the anger of local hoodlums, who pursued the driver on motorcycles and ultimately attacked him along Tudun Wada Ring Road in Jos, resulting in his tragic demise.
