Oby Ezekwesili Criticizes Plans to Purchase Luxury Vehicles for Lawmakers

Oby Ezekwesili’s Critique

Former Minister of Education, Oby Ezekwesili, has strongly criticized the proposed acquisition of luxury vehicles for lawmakers of the 10th National Assembly.

The plan, which includes providing brand new official vehicles to members, has raised concerns, especially in the current economic hardship faced by Nigerians.

House of Representatives’ Clarification

The House of Representatives, through its Chairman of the House Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Akin Rotimi, sought to address the controversy.

Rotimi stated that media reports regarding the procurement of vehicles for lawmakers have been exaggerated.

He clarified that the vehicles are intended for utility operational purposes tied to the lawmakers’ oversight functions.

These vehicles are expected to be returned after the lawmakers’ tenure.

However, there is an option for members to purchase the vehicles by paying the outstanding value after their National Assembly service.

Ezekwesili’s Reaction

In response to this development, Oby Ezekwesili expressed her concerns on the X platform.

She questioned the accuracy of the news surrounding the planned acquisition of N58 billion worth of Toyota model SUVs for members of the House of Representatives and the Senate.

Ezekwesili highlighted the timing of such an announcement, considering the hardships faced by many Nigerians due to the recent removal of fuel subsidies.

A Plea for Wisdom

In her message, Ezekwesili conveyed a prayer, expressing hope that the members of the National Assembly make wise decisions given the current economic and social context.

She emphasized the need for a credible source of information to clarify the situation and guide the public response.
