Northern Durban Faces 21-Hour Water Disruption as eThekwini Municipality Takes Action

The eThekwini Municipality has announced a 21-hour water shutdown to address the extended water outage affecting the northern parts of Durban.

Initially planned for Tuesday, 20 February, the shutdown has now been rescheduled to commence at 20:00 on Tuesday, 27 February, and conclude at 17:00 on Wednesday, 28 February.

Pipeline Maintenance and Progress Update

The water shutdown is necessitated by the maintenance work on the pipeline carrying water from Durban Heights Treatment Works to the northern areas.

The municipality states that a significant portion of the required work has been completed, involving leak repairs and the replacement of air valves in specific pipeline sections.

However, the remaining valves need modification to integrate into the network, prompting the upcoming shutdown.

Reservoir Operations and Water Supply During Shutdown

During the shutdown, the municipality assures that reservoirs will remain open during peak periods in the morning and afternoon on Wednesday.

However, the water supply during these times will be contingent on consumption patterns.

Additionally, water tankers will be deployed to the affected areas to mitigate the impact of the shutdown on residents.

List of Affected Areas

The areas affected by the eThekwini water shutdown include:

Phoenix

Sea Cow Lake

Avoca Hills

Amaoti

Newlands East

KwaMashu

Ntuzuma

Durban North

Umhlanga

Residents in these areas are advised to prepare for the scheduled shutdown and make necessary arrangements to manage their water needs during the specified period.

The rescheduling of the water shutdown by the eThekwini Municipality demonstrates a commitment to addressing the prolonged water outage in a systematic manner.

The completion of substantial maintenance work prior to the shutdown indicates proactive efforts to minimize disruption.

The deployment of water tankers and communication about reservoir operations during peak periods reflect a focus on community welfare and awareness.

As the municipality undertakes these measures, collaboration with residents is essential to ensure a smooth and well-managed process during the scheduled shutdown.
