Eskom Suspends Load Shedding Temporarily as Generation Performance Improves

Eskom Suspends Load Shedding Until 16:00

In a welcome turn of events, Eskom has announced the suspension of load shedding until 16:00 due to improved generation performance.

However, this relief will be temporary. Starting at 16:00, Stage 2 load shedding will be implemented and will continue until 05:00 on the following day.

The load shedding will be suspended from 05:00 to 16:00 daily, followed by the resumption of Stage 2 load shedding from 16:00 to 05:00.

Eskom’s Appeal for Energy Conservation

Eskom has made an earnest plea to the public to reduce energy demand during peak hours, particularly from 17:00 to 21:00.

They have urged households to switch off non-essential appliances, with a special focus on geysers and pool pumps, to alleviate the strain on the power grid.

A Brief Introduction to Eskom

Eskom, short for the Electricity Supply Commission, is South Africa’s national electricity public utility.

Established in 1923, it holds the distinction of being the largest electricity producer on the African continent and was among the world’s leading utilities in terms of generation capacity and sales.

Eskom is also the largest state-owned enterprise in South Africa.

Eskom’s Power Stations

Eskom operates several significant power stations across the country, including Matimba Power Stations, Medupi Power Station in Lephalale, Kusile Power Station in Witbank, Kendal Power Station in Mpumalanga, and the Koeberg Nuclear Power Station in the Western Cape, which stands as the sole nuclear power plant in Africa.

City of Cape Town Adjusts Its Load Shedding Schedule

In response to Eskom’s announcement, the City of Cape Town has made adjustments to its load shedding schedule.

Load shedding is currently suspended until 22:00, after which Stage 2 will be implemented until 05:00.

Tips to Mitigate Load Shedding Risks

As load shedding continues to impact daily life, here are some useful tips to mitigate the risks associated with power outages:

  1. Invest in surge protection to safeguard electronic equipment.
  2. Ensure your alarm system has a working backup battery.
  3. Keep a torch or headlamp handy.
  4. Save emergency contact information, both digitally and on paper.
  5. Charge your essential devices in advance and have backup power sources like power banks.
  6. Consider alternative cooking and lighting options, such as gas appliances.

These measures can help you navigate the challenges posed by load shedding more effectively.

Remember to check the Load Shedding Schedule for your specific area to stay informed.
