Elton John to Score Musical Adaptation of “The Devil Wears Prada” in London’s West End
Unlikely Collaboration Becomes Reality
The concept of an Elton John-scored musical adaptation of the fashion comedy “The Devil Wears Prada” might seem like a fantastical idea conceived during a night out with friends, but it’s now a reality. A new musical version of the 2006 film is set to make its debut in London’s West End next year. Elton John will provide the music, with lyrics by award-winning American musician Shaina Taub and a script by actor-writer Kate Wetherhead.
Premiere Date and Location
The highly anticipated production, directed and choreographed by three-time Tony award-winner Jerry Mitchell (known for “Kinky Boots”), will open at London’s Dominion Theatre in October of the following year. Previews are scheduled at the Theatre Royal in Plymouth starting in July 2024.
Long-Awaited Production
For fans of Elton John, the classic film starring Anne Hathaway, and the original 2003 novel by Lauren Weisberger, the musical adaptation has been a long time coming. It was initially announced in 2019 that the musical would premiere in Chicago in the summer of 2020 before heading to Broadway. However, the pandemic disrupted these plans, leading to a four-year delay.
Plot and Characters
The musical will closely follow the storyline of the book and film. It centers on Andy Sachs, a recent graduate who enters the fashion industry as the junior assistant to Miranda Priestly, the demanding editor-in-chief of Runway magazine. While the role is highly coveted, Andy’s personal relationships begin to suffer due to the demands of her job.
Cast Yet to Be Announced
As of now, the casting for the production has not been revealed.
Excitement from the Creators
Elton John expressed his enthusiasm for the project, stating, “Re-imagining The Devil Wears Prada for the musical theater is super-exciting.” He expressed his love for both the book and the film and his eagerness to contribute to this iconic story.
Shaina Taub, who collaborated with Elton John on the musical’s music and lyrics, shared her excitement for the project in 2019. She described Elton John as an incredible artist who was open to collaboration, making it a powerful experience to work with such a music legend.
