Driver High on Drugs and Alcohol Causes Fatal Collision Killing Two Women and a Child in Worcester

In a horrifying incident on Spetchley Road, a reckless driver under the influence of alcohol and drugs caused a devastating crash that claimed the lives of two women and a six-year-old boy.

Joe-Lewis Tyler, after consuming five pints, four shots, cocaine, and cannabis, got behind the wheel of a BMW 3 Series in Worcester.

His dangerous driving led to a tragic collision with a taxi, resulting in a catastrophic loss of life.

The crash, captured on CCTV, shows Tyler’s grey BMW smashing into a white Ford Mondeo taxi with such force that it spun 180 degrees before coming to rest on a grass verge.

Six-year-old Leo Painter had just been picked up from school when the crash occurred. Taxi driver Courtney Hemming and mother-of-three Claire Adkins, who was escorting Leo, died instantly. Leo succumbed to his injuries the following day after being rushed to the hospital.

Tyler was arrested at the scene, and tests revealed he had 215 milligrams of alcohol per 100ml of blood, well over the legal limit of 80ml. He also had high levels of cocaine and cannabis in his system.

After spending three weeks in the hospital for his injuries, Tyler pleaded guilty to multiple counts of causing death by dangerous driving and was sentenced to 18 years in prison, with eligibility for release after 12 years.

The sentencing sparked outrage among the victims’ friends and family, who felt the punishment was inadequate.

Ms. Hemming’s partner, Luke Bridger, expressed his frustration, calling the sentence “pathetic” and criticizing the court for failing to deliver justice. Leo’s mother, Gemma, and his father, Jason, shared their heartbreak and anger, emphasizing the profound impact of losing Leo.

The Judge’s Statement and Community Impact

Judge James Burbidge KC condemned Tyler’s actions, describing his driving as one of the worst cases of prolonged dangerous driving he had encountered.

Despite Tyler’s claims of driving normally, the collision report indicated he was driving at 90mph in a 50mph zone. The community remains deeply affected by the tragedy, with Chief Inspector Andy Wortley acknowledging the lasting heartbreak and disruption caused by Tyler’s reckless behavior.

A Heartbroken Family Remembers

Leo’s mother, Gemma, paid a touching tribute to her son, recalling his joyful nature and love for PAW Patrol.

She shared her sorrow over the missed opportunity to reunite with Leo, who had been living with foster carers but was due to return to her care. The family’s grief is compounded by the senselessness of the crash and the loss of their beloved Leo.

Conclusion

This tragic event underscores the devastating consequences of reckless and impaired driving. As the community mourns, there is a call for stricter penalties to prevent such tragedies in the future and ensure that justice is adequately served for the lives lost.
