Couple Arrested for Prescription Drug Scheme
Dr. Francis Martinis, a Long Island urologist, and his wife, Jessica, faced charges of criminal sale of controlled substances and falsifying business records.
Their arrest, connected to a prescription drug scheme, involved the identities of cast members from the reality show ‘Below Deck.’ The couple is set to appear in a Long Island court.
Suspicious Prescription Activity
Authorities became suspicious when a handwritten oxycodone prescription linked to Jessica surfaced at a New York pharmacy.
Further investigation uncovered over a dozen allegedly fraudulent prescriptions for oxycodone, written under the names of various ‘Below Deck’ cast members. Jessica reportedly collected the prescriptions using cash payments.
Potential Consequences and Message from Prosecutors
Former New York Homeland Security Director Michael Balboni emphasized the seriousness of these charges, particularly regarding the misuse of celebrity status to acquire drugs.
Balboni highlighted that such actions, if proven, reflect a common criminal scheme. Prosecutors aim to send a message to all physicians about the consequences of misusing their access to controlled substances.
Connection to ‘Below Deck’ Shows
Dr. Martinis and Jessica were part of the ‘Below Deck Mediterranean’ cast, chartering the luxury yacht Sirocco in the French Riviera in 2019. Additionally, Dr. Martinis appeared in the spin-off series ‘Below Deck Sailing Yacht.’
