Defender Lincoln Zvasiya Shares How Tinashe Nengomasha Helped Zimbabwean Players Settle at Kaizer Chiefs in South Africa

Tinashe Nengomasha, fondly known as the ‘Midfield General’ during his illustrious career at Kaizer Chiefs, left an indelible mark on the club.

From 2001 to 2012, he graced the field with a unique blend of combativeness and agility, both with and without the ball.

His style became synonymous with success as he helped the Soweto giants end a seven-year league title drought, securing two successive DStv Premiership titles in the 2003/04 and 2004/05 seasons.

Nengomasha’s influence extended beyond just titles.

He played a pivotal role in securing numerous cups for the club, including two MTN8 Cups, the Nedbank Cup, five Telkom Knockout trophies, and three Vodacom Challenge Cups.

His consistency and leadership earned him accolades such as the Player of the Season for 2003/04 and the Players’ Player of the Year award during that same season.

Beyond his on-field heroics, Nengomasha played a crucial off-field role in integrating Zimbabwean players into the Kaizer Chiefs family.

During his tenure, approximately eight Zimbabweans, including Thomas Sweswe, Willard Katsande, and Knowledge Musona, found success at the club.

Lincoln Zvasiya, among others, also benefited from Nengomasha’s guidance.

Lincoln Zvasiya on Nengomasha’s Impact

Lincoln Zvasiya, reflecting on his time at Kaizer Chiefs, highlighted Nengomasha’s invaluable contribution to the Zimbabwean players’ integration.

“Tinashe Nengomasha was a steward at Naturena,” Zvasiya explained. “He mentored me and others, showing us the ropes just as Luke Petros did for him.

His guidance made it easier for Zimbabweans to settle and succeed at Kaizer Chiefs.”

Ensuring a Lasting Legacy

Today, Nengomasha’s legacy continues to inspire players like those at Maritzburg, who strive to emulate his impact both on and off the field.

His leadership and dedication to nurturing talent have left an enduring mark on the history of Kaizer Chiefs and South African football as a whole.
