Costco agrees to $2 million settlement over claims Kirkland flushable wipes damaged plumbing systems nationwide

Costco has agreed to pay out $2 million to settle a class action lawsuit accusing its Kirkland Signature Moist Flushable Wipes of false advertising.

The settlement follows claims that the wipes, marketed as flushable, caused damage to plumbing systems.

Customers who purchased these wipes between July 1, 2011, and May 31, 2017, may be eligible for compensation.

To receive a part of the settlement, affected consumers must submit a claim form by August 9, 2024.

Despite claims that the wipes were flushable, plaintiffs alleged significant damage to pipes, septic systems, and sewage lines.

Under the terms, consumers could receive up to $55.90, based on the number of products purchased, without needing proof of purchase.

Environmental Impact and Controversy

Concerns about the environmental impact of flushable wipes have been raised, with reports of these products contributing to ‘fatbergs’—clogs composed of cooking fat and wet wipes—in sewage systems across the US.

Costco Issues Recall Due to Safety Concerns

In a separate issue, Costco has recalled 567,000 myCharge Power Hub All-In-One 10,000mAh portable chargers sold between January 2022 and November 2023.

This recall follows reports of overheating incidents, including cases where the chargers caused home fires.

Recall Details and Consumer Advisory

Consumers are advised to stop using these chargers immediately and can receive a free replacement.

The recall affects three specific models of the charger, which were priced around $40 and sold both in stores and online.

Consumer Safety Concerns

The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) highlighted the urgency of discontinuing use due to safety hazards associated with overheating during charging.
