Montgomery’s remarks came during his visit to the Presidential Villa in Abuja, where he met with Vice President Kashim Shettima.

While acknowledging the existing challenges of inflation and unemployment, Montgomery stressed that the reforms implemented by the government would contribute to Nigeria’s higher growth trajectory.
He affirmed that the UK, particularly the City of London, views Nigeria as a significant opportunity for trade and investment, and he pledged to support efforts to boost bilateral trade and investment ties.
Immigration Restrictions and Context
Montgomery addressed the issue of the UK government’s decision to ban foreign students, including Nigerians, from bringing family members to the country as part of efforts to reduce immigration numbers.
He stated that this matter was not discussed during his meeting with the vice president.
However, he provided context by mentioning the significant increase in Nigerian student visas granted by the UK in recent years.
He also highlighted the need to manage visitor numbers and migration, emphasizing that similar measures are taken by the Nigerian government.
