In a troubling turn of events, a British Army officer was attacked in broad daylight outside an Army barracks in Kent. Lt Col Mark Teeton, 47, was reportedly stabbed near Brompton Barracks in Gillingham on Tuesday evening, just before 6 p.m.
The incident occurred around 200 yards from the barracks, where Lt Col Teeton was seriously injured.
Anthony Esan, 24, was apprehended near his home on Mooring Road, Rochester, at approximately 6:30 p.m. on the same day.
Esan faces charges of attempted murder and possession of an offensive weapon in a public place. He was seen being escorted into Medway Magistrates’ Court earlier today.
Lt Col Teeton, a father of two, remains in a ‘serious but stable’ condition at the hospital following the attack.
Neighbors reported that his wife desperately sought help from soldiers and local residents, her cries captured on a Ring doorbell camera. Lt Col Teeton, who has served in the Army for 24 years and managed courses at the barracks for nearly six years, was airlifted to the hospital with injuries consistent with stab wounds.
In addition to his current role, Lt Col Teeton has a distinguished career within the Armed Forces and the Ministry of Defence, holding various educational roles.
He was awarded the long service and good conduct medal in 2018 and recently ran 44 miles on the 80th anniversary of D-Day to raise funds for Combat Stress, a charity supporting veterans. His efforts raised nearly £3,000 for the cause.
Community Response and Lockdown
Witnesses noted that Lt Col Teeton was wearing a ‘cream camouflage’ military uniform at the time of the attack.
Following the incident, Brompton was briefly locked down, with soldiers instructed to stay indoors.
An air ambulance was seen landing nearby at Great Lines Heritage Park.
Reactions from Leaders
The shocking news has prompted reactions from high-profile figures.
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer expressed his shock and offered well wishes for Lt Col Teeton’s recovery.
Opposition Leader Rishi Sunak echoed these sentiments, while Chief of General Staff General Sir Roly Walker conveyed his deep sadness over the attack, assuring that the Army will support Lt Col Teeton and his family during this difficult time.
Ongoing Investigation
The Army has pledged to work closely with Kent Police to determine the circumstances surrounding the attack and to support the ongoing investigation.
