Doyin Okupe, Former Labour Party Campaign DG, Resigns Citing Ideological Disagreements

Okupe’s Resignation Announcement

Doyin Okupe, the former director-general of the Labour Party’s Presidential Campaign Organization, formally submitted his resignation from the party, citing irreconcilable ideological differences.

His decision, communicated via a letter dated January 8, 2024, outlined his reasons for stepping down from his position.

Political Experience and Background

Having had a longstanding career in politics, coupled with a background in the medical field, Okupe has previously served as a spokesperson for former Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan.

His political involvement dates back to the early 1990s when he acted as the spokesperson for the Third Republic National Republican Convention.

Content of Resignation Letter

In his resignation letter addressed to the Labour Party, Okupe expressed gratitude for the party’s support during the 2023 Presidential Elections, highlighting his and Mr. Peter Obi’s abrupt departure from the PDP and subsequent alliance with the Labour Party.

However, he noted the challenge of aligning with the party’s ideological stance, rooted in the left of the political spectrum, while personally identifying as a rightist and Liberal Democrat.

This ideological conflict led him to seek an exit, intending to continue his political endeavors aligned with liberalism and freedom.

Acknowledgment and Wishes

Okupe thanked the Labour Party’s leadership for their cordiality and respect during his tenure as the Director General of the Obi-Datti Presidential Campaign Organization.

He conveyed his well wishes for the party’s success in future pursuits, concluding with expressions of solidarity for the Labour Party and Nigeria.
