To help you save and enjoy your braai to the fullest, we’ve conducted a comprehensive price comparison of braai essentials at five of South Africa’s favorite supermarkets: Makro, Checkers, Shoprite, Pick n Pay, and Woolworths.
Each week, we visit these supermarkets so you don’t have to waste time and money, allowing you to enjoy your braai with the best prices available.
Ranking the Supermarkets
Here are the rankings based on the cost of a typical braai basket at each of the five supermarkets:

- Checkers – R869.90
- Pick n Pay – R891.90
- Woolworths – R986.40

We’ve compared the prices of 10 common braai items to determine which supermarket offers the best prices, both for individual items and the entire braai basket, for this week’s selection.
It’s important to note that we do not consider discounts or card-holder specials in this comparison.
When exact name-brand items aren’t available, we use the nearest house-brand alternative.
The prices provided are based on those applicable in Gauteng, accounting for fluctuations in prices both inland and at the coast in South Africa.
