Antiques Roadshow Unveils a Hidden Gem

An Antiques Roadshow guest was left astonished when he received an astonishing valuation for an item he had purchased at a car boot sale for just £5.

Discovering a Hollywood Film Score

The BBC show, which aired on Sunday (November 5) at Wollaton Hall in Nottingham, featured experts examining various items of exceptional value. Among the hopeful collectors was a man who had acquired a Hollywood film score that had been stored in a “rather scruffy folder” for years.

The Musical Score by Bernard Herrmann

It was revealed that the papers inside the folder contained the musical score by the renowned Hollywood composer Bernard Herrmann, known for creating iconic music for Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho (1960), Orson Welles’ Citizen Kane (1941), and TV’s The Twilight Zone. The score even included handwritten notes by the American musician.

A Thrifty Purchase

The guest explained how he obtained the item for a mere £5 and believed it could be of value. His intuition proved to be accurate.

An Expert’s Appraisal

Expert Justin Croft disclosed that the score was “Bernard’s own copy” for the 1952 drama The Snows of Kilimanjaro, featuring Gregory Peck, Susan Hayward, and Ava Gardner.

An Original with Historical Significance

Croft highlighted the annotations on the score, emphasizing their importance in matching the score with the film. Although it may not be Herrmann’s most famous film score, having an original version with his corrections and annotations from the time of its use in the film is significant.

A Valuation that Shocks

The guest was taken aback when Croft revealed that the item would be worth £800 to £1000 at auction, prompting a witty response: “Not bad for £5.”
