On the evening of July 23, 2024, a serious incident unfolded near Brompton Barracks in Gillingham, Kent.
At around 5:55 p.m., emergency services responded to reports of a stabbing at Sally Port Gardens, just 200 yards from the military facility.
The victim, a lieutenant colonel in his 40s, sustained stab wounds and was airlifted to a hospital.
His condition has been described as serious but stable.
By 6:30 p.m. the same day, authorities had arrested 24-year-old Anthony Esan near his residence on Mooring Road in Rochester.
Esan has been charged with attempted murder and possession of an offensive weapon in a public place.
He is scheduled to appear at Medway Magistrates’ Court on July 25.
Barracks Lockdown
In response to the attack, Brompton Barracks, which houses the Royal School of Military Engineering, was briefly placed on lockdown.
Soldiers were instructed to stay indoors while the situation was assessed. An air ambulance was spotted landing in Great Lines Heritage Park, close to the crime scene, highlighting the severity of the situation.
