In a troubling turn of events, Lieutenant Colonel Mark Teeton was attacked outside Brompton Barracks in Gillingham, Kent, in broad daylight.
This incident unfolded on Tuesday evening, just 200 yards from the barracks where Lt Col Teeton works. The Army officer, who has been serving for 24 years, was left in a ‘serious but stable’ condition at the hospital.
Lt Col Teeton was targeted while dressed in his ‘cream camouflage’ military uniform. His wife, in a desperate bid for help, flagged down nearby soldiers and residents.
Their efforts were captured by a Ring doorbell camera.
The lieutenant colonel was airlifted to the hospital after suffering injuries consistent with stab wounds.
Arrest and Charges
Anthony Esan, a 24-year-old, was arrested later the same day at his home in Mooring Road, Rochester.
He faces charges of attempted murder and possession of an offensive weapon in a public place.
Esan is set to appear in Medway Magistrates’ Court today.
Response from Authorities
The incident prompted a brief lockdown of Brompton Barracks, with soldiers instructed to stay indoors.
An air ambulance was seen landing in the nearby Great Lines Heritage Park.
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer expressed his shock and wished Lt Col Teeton a swift recovery.
Opposition leader Rishi Sunak also extended his thoughts and well-wishes.
The Chief of General Staff, General Sir Roly Walker, conveyed his deep sadness over the attack and assured that the Army would support the investigation alongside Kent Police.
