When Vice Presidential hopeful Mark Kelly’s daughter, Claire Kelly, shared images of illegal drugs on her Instagram story, it was an unexpected and public challenge for the Arizona Senator.
Back in 2020, Claire, then 23, posted a video showing what appeared to be marijuana and ecstasy, commonly known as molly.
The video was captioned with the words “P***y molly weed,” referring to the illicit substances. In Arizona, possession of ecstasy is a felony, making the post particularly concerning.
In another Instagram story, Claire shared a screenshot of text messages from her father.
Senator Kelly expressed concern about her post, having received calls and emails about it.
He advised her to remove the content, indicating his disapproval. Claire responded dismissively, assuring him her Instagram was “fine” and inviting him to check it himself. Kelly, cautious about the situation, declined the offer.
Moving Forward
Despite the controversy, it seems the incident didn’t create a lasting rift between Claire and her father. They’ve been spotted together in photos on Kelly’s Facebook account, suggesting they’ve moved past the episode.
At the time, Claire had recently graduated from Arizona State University and was working at a communications firm.
She has since deleted her Instagram and X accounts, distancing herself from the incident.
A New Chapter
Now, Claire Kelly has embarked on a new career in New York City, where she founded a social media and marketing company called Rise and Shine Social.
As for her father, Mark Kelly, he remains a prominent political figure. A former Navy pilot and astronaut, Kelly is now considered a potential running mate for Vice President Kamala Harris in the upcoming election.
His strong stance on border security and successful election to the Senate in 2020, defeating Republican Martha McSally, have made him a notable figure in the Democratic Party.
The Bigger Picture
Other potential candidates for the Vice Presidential slot include Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear, and North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper. Governors J.B. Pritzker of Illinois, Gavin Newsom of California, and Gretchen Whitmer of Michigan have also been mentioned as possible contenders.
As the Democratic Party prepares for the next election cycle, the choice of running mate will be a crucial decision.
