The Secure Nation Group, a prominent entity within the Arewa region, has expressed its appreciation to the Nigerian Senate for its recent decision not to confirm the nomination of Malam Nasir El-Rufai as a federal minister.
This move was in response to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s submission of a list containing 48 ministerial nominees, among which El-Rufai was included.
The Senate’s scrutiny resulted in the confirmation of 45 nominees, leaving El-Rufai and two others awaiting further security assessments.
Senate’s Selective Confirmation and the Role of Akpabio
The Nigerian Senate, led by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, concluded the confirmation process for the ministerial nominees with a substantial majority passing the scrutiny.
However, the confirmation process for El-Rufai and two other nominees was deferred, pending additional security evaluations.
Akpabio conveyed that the nominees who were not confirmed could seek resolution through engagement with the President.
Secure Nation Group’s Response and Allegations of Persecution
Amidst the widespread discussions that followed this development, the Secure Nation Group issued a statement via their representatives – Ahmed Lawal, Mabel B. Abraham, Mohammed S. Bashir, Kriss Allen, and Godwin E. Emmanuel.
The group, while commenting on the situation, accused the former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, of being targeted unfairly.
They emphasized the importance of safeguarding citizens’ rights to exercise their religious beliefs, freedom of speech, and association within a democratic framework.
The Secure Nation Group emphasized the essential nature of religious freedom, underlining the right to worship individually or collectively, publicly or privately.
This freedom also encompasses participation in religious practices, observances, and teachings, all while being shielded from any form of governmental or societal persecution.
In this complex landscape of political appointments and security assessments, the Arewa region’s voice, articulated through the Secure Nation Group, has highlighted the significance of democratic principles and individual rights.
The outcome of El-Rufai’s ministerial nomination, as subject to further security checks, reflects the intricate interplay between governance, security, and individual liberties in Nigeria’s democratic framework.
