The Anambra State House of Assembly has passed a resolution urging Governor Willie Obiano to direct the Commissioners for Works and Environment, to, as a matter of urgency, take proactive measures to control the gully erosion at the boundary of Igbariam -Achalla road leading to the Awka North Local Government Secretariat, Achalla.
The resolution was sequel to a motion of urgent public importance sponsored to that effect by the member representing Awka North Constituency, Honourable John Nwokoye during plenary.
House of Assembly Correspondent, Chukwuemeka Modilim reports that while
explaining the motion, Honourable Nwokoye said that the road is the only route to Awka North local government headquarters and their major market, hence the need for the state government to fix it.
On his part, the member representing Orumba North Constituency, Honourable Emma Nwafor who observed that the deplorable condition of the area makes it difficult for most communities in Awka North to access their local government Headquarters, appealed to Governor Willie Obiano and the relevant agencies to put up control measures on the road to salvage the situation.
In their separate speeches, the member representing Nnewi North Constituency, Honourable Nonso Okafor, his Anaocha Two Constituency counterpart, Honourable Ejike Okechukwu and the member for Dunukofia Constituency, Honourable Lawrence Ezeudu highlighted the socio-economic importance of Awka North to Anambra State and expressed confidence that the Ministries of Works and Environment will rise to the occasion.
The Speaker of the House, Right Honourable Uche Okafor described the situation as very pathetic and read out the resolution of the House, while the lawmakers supported it through a voice vote
