Southern States and Pro-Life Legislation
Several southern states, including Mississippi, Alabama, and Louisiana, made it to the top 10 in terms of pro-life initiatives.
North Carolina notably surged in rankings, with AUL noting the state’s significant leap after state lawmakers overrode Gov.
Roy Cooper’s veto of pro-life legislation, instituting a ban on most abortions after 12 weeks.
Trends in Pro-Life Policies
South Dakota, positioned at ninth place on the list, is projected by AUL to witness a year with zero reported abortions.
Additionally, both Idaho and Arizona secured spots within the top 10.
However, certain states faced opposition from the pro-abortion movement.
Ohio, for instance, experienced a significant pushback as voters overwhelmingly approved a ballot referendum in November, introducing a new right to “reproductive freedom” encompassing abortion and contraception into the state constitution.
Challenges and Potential Shifts
Acknowledging challenges, AUL highlighted efforts in Arizona aimed at embedding abortion rights in the state constitution, signaling a potential shift in the pro-life landscape.
AUL also underscored the impact these efforts might have on next year’s rankings of the Life List.
States with Lower Rankings
Conversely, states like Illinois, California, and New York found themselves among the lowest-ranking states in terms of pro-life policies.
Vermont secured the bottom spot on the list.
Criteria for Ranking
AUL clarified that the Life List rankings are based on specific criteria evaluating states’ commitment to protecting life from conception to natural death.
