Afenifere Leader Warns Oyo Governor Makinde: Hands Off Leadership Tussle

Makinde’s Attempt to Reconcile Yoruba Leaders and Strengthen Unity

Governor Makinde had initiated a meeting with the aim of reconciling the two Yoruba leaders and fostering unity within the Yoruba nation and Afenifere as an organization.

Divisions Caused by Support for Different Presidential Candidates

During the 2023 presidential election, Adebanjo and Fasoranti supported different candidates, leading to a division within the Afenifere organization.

Adebanjo backed Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP), while Fasoranti supported Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Makinde’s Plea for Reconciliation

After a closed-door meeting in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State, Governor Makinde appealed to the warring leaders to set aside their differences and embrace peace.

He emphasized that the unity of the Yoruba race should be of utmost importance to every leader of the organization.

Adebanjo Dismisses Peace Parley, Rejects Plans for Reconciliation

In a swift response, Adebanjo dismissed the peace parley meeting and stated that he was unaware of any plans to reconcile him with his predecessor.

He clarified that he had no grievances with Fasoranti and cautioned Governor Makinde against interfering in matters he did not fully understand.

Adebanjo’s Stance on Afenifere Unity

Adebanjo emphasized that he stood against any attempts to split Afenifere and warned Governor Makinde not to get involved in issues he was not well-informed about.

Adebanjo concluded by stating, “What Governor Makinde does not know about, he should not interfere.

I have no dispute with Baba Fasoranti.

He should not be one of those who want to split Afenifere, and that is not what I stand for.”
