After an exciting Saturday night in Soweto, Orlando Pirates’ head coach, Jose Riveiro, had some high praise for one of his standout players.
The team kicked off their 2024 MTN8 campaign with a solid 3-1 win over SuperSport United at the bustling Orlando Stadium.
Under the guidance of Spanish coach Jose Riveiro, the Buccaneers have truly made their mark in the MTN8 competition.
They’ve claimed the title in both of his seasons with the club.
Back in 2022, they triumphed over AmaZulu FC, and last season they overcame Mamelodi Sundowns at the Moses Mabhida Stadium.
These victories have solidified their reputation as the Cup kings of South African football.
In just the past two seasons alone, Pirates have amassed four domestic trophies. Besides their consecutive MTN8 wins, they’ve also secured back-to-back Nedbank Cup titles.
Riveiro’s Praise for Monnapule Saleng
Jose Riveiro couldn’t help but sing the praises of Monnapule Saleng following his impressive performance against SuperSport United. Saleng, who was named Man of the Match, was instrumental in all three goals scored by Pirates.
His speed and skill kept the SuperSport defense on high alert throughout the game.
Alongside Saleng, Olisa Ndah and Evidence Makgopa also found the back of the net, while Vincent Pule scored for Matsatsantsa.
Riveiro highlighted Saleng’s progress from the previous pre-season. “If I compare this pre-season with the past one, he’s definitely in a better space. His performances in Spain were really strong, showcasing his capabilities,” Riveiro noted.
“He’s surrounded by talented teammates who support him well, and he had a fantastic game against SuperSport United, constantly threatening the opposition.
He looked really happy after the match, and I believe this will boost his confidence. We’re hopeful for a great season from him, especially since we missed him at times last season. It’s been a while since he’s been named Man of the Match.”
A Glimpse of Saleng’s Recent Form
During the 2023/24 season, Saleng experienced a dip in form, often coming on as a substitute in the second half. He played in 27 matches across all competitions and scored five goals. Despite this, his recent performance indicates a promising return to form.
