In a rather unusual and memorable moment, President Joe Biden recently gave an unexpected piece of advice to a young girl at a White House event.
During a gathering to celebrate the release of several Americans held overseas, Biden was caught on camera giving the daughter of one of the freed hostages some awkward yet heartfelt advice.
The event was set to celebrate Miriam Butorin, who had just turned 13.
As Biden took the stage in the State Dining Room, he led the crowd in singing “Happy Birthday” to Miriam, the daughter of Alsu Kurmasheva—one of the hostages released in a landmark prisoner swap. Biden’s cheerful demeanor was clear as he told the audience about Miriam’s special day and encouraged everyone to join in the birthday song.
After the singing wrapped up, Biden gave Miriam a hug and shared some unusual advice for a teenager: “And remember, no serious guys until you’re 30. God love you.”
His words, intended to be humorous, seemed to make Miriam a bit emotional as she laughed nervously and wiped away tears. This interaction came as a surprise, especially given that Biden had been out of the public eye for a few days.
This heartfelt moment occurred just hours after the historic prisoner swap deal was announced. The deal secured the release of American ex-Marine Paul Whelan, Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich, and Kurmasheva, among others.
Biden highlighted that the swap involved not only these Americans but also 16 other individuals, including Germans and Russians held in Russia.
During the event, Biden also addressed the release of controversial figures like Vadim Krasikov, known as the “bicycle assassin,” who had been serving a life sentence in Germany.
When questioned about the decision to release someone with such a criminal past, Biden defended the choice, stating, “I got home innocent people.” He positioned the release as a necessary step in ensuring the freedom of those who had been unjustly detained.
Reflecting on Values and Diplomacy
In his remarks, Biden reflected on the importance of family and American values, drawing from his personal experiences and the struggles faced by the families of the released hostages.
He emphasized the role of American allies in making the deal possible and praised the diplomatic efforts involved.
Looking Ahead
Biden’s comments on the deal come at a time when he has been stepping back from the presidential race and focusing on recalibrating his role as he is not seeking reelection.
His recent actions and statements underline his commitment to diplomatic achievements and the importance of maintaining strong international relationships.
