Graeme Souness Opens Up About Surviving a Shooting and Swimming the English Channel for Charity on “Everything I Know About Me” Podcast

Graeme Souness, a legendary figure in football, recently opened up in an interview on the “Everything I Know About Me” podcast, hosted by the Mail.

The 71-year-old Scot, renowned for his exceptional playing career, won five league titles and three European Cups with Liverpool.

He also played for clubs like Middlesbrough, Rangers, and Sampdoria.

However, Souness shared that his life hasn’t always been smooth sailing.

In a heartfelt and candid discussion, Souness revealed a harrowing moment from the 1980s when he was the target of a shooting.

This incident occurred during the later years of his playing career, a time he admits was challenging.

Known for his straightforwardness, Souness didn’t hold back as he recounted this and other difficult periods, breaking down in tears during the podcast.

Despite the ups and downs, Souness emphasized his pride in his journey.

He expressed confidence in his identity and achievements, both as a player and later as a manager and pundit. “It doesn’t worry me in the slightest about getting canceled, who cares?” Souness stated.

He stressed that he never saw football as a popularity contest and is content with his legacy, proud of the majority of his story.

New Challenges and Charitable Efforts

After leaving his punditry role at Sky Sports in April 2023, Souness took on new challenges.

Last year, he swam across the English Channel, raising over £1 million for DEBRA, a charity supporting people with Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB), a blistering skin condition. This cause is particularly close to his heart after meeting a young girl named Isla, who has EB.

Souness, who has undergone a triple heart bypass, described the swim as “tougher than expected,” completing it in 12 hours and 17 minutes. He paid tribute to his fellow swimmers, including Isla’s father, Andy Grist, acknowledging their support and camaraderie.

Reflections and Future Aspirations

Souness reflected on the challenges of the swim, particularly the first hour spent in darkness.

Despite the difficulties, he felt elated and proud of the accomplishment, highlighting the importance of teamwork and perseverance. Looking forward, Souness remains engaged and optimistic, eager to continue contributing in various ways.
