Gladiators Referee John Anderson Passes Away at 92, Leaving a Legacy of Iconic Catchphrases and Athletic Mentorship in Glasgow

In a poignant turn of events, we’re mourning the loss of Gladiators icon John Anderson, who has passed away at the age of 92.

John, who was a fixture on the popular series from its 1992 debut through to its conclusion in 2000 and a brief revival in 2008, is best remembered for his unforgettable catchphrase: “Contenders ready, Gladiators ready.” No specific cause of death has been revealed yet.

The official X account for Gladiators shared their grief, stating, “We are deeply saddened by the passing of our beloved referee, John Anderson, at the age of 92. Our hearts go out to his friends and family.

John will always be remembered as the iconic voice that brought ‘Gladiators Ready! Contenders Ready!’ to life.”

John Anderson’s influence stretched far beyond the television screen. Born in Glasgow, he made significant contributions as a coach, guiding Olympians such as Dave Moorcroft, who shattered the 5000m record in 1982.

John also coached Liz McColgan, a silver medalist, and Judy Simpson, a Commonwealth heptathlete who later appeared as Gladiator Nightshade.

Tributes from the Athletic Community

Athletics Weekly quoted Dave Moorcroft reflecting on John’s impact: “I can’t speak too highly of John; he turned water into wine. He was a fighter in everything he did. He coached me from the age of 16 and never took a penny. It cost him a fortune to work for nothing.”

Fans’ Reactions

The news of John Anderson’s passing has prompted an outpouring of tributes from fans on X, formerly Twitter. One user wrote, “Sad news tonight that the original Referee of Gladiators, John Anderson, has died. A true icon of the show and will be fondly remembered by all Gladiators fans.

RIP John and thanks for the memories.” Another added, “Sad news he was the original ref of the show, such a legend. RIP John Anderson.”

John Anderson’s legacy as both a revered referee and a dedicated coach will continue to be celebrated by all who knew him.
