Riccardo Calafiori is wrapping up his transfer to Arsenal, with the 22-year-old set to sign a deal worth around £42 million.
The Italian defender played a crucial role in Bologna’s successful campaign, which earned them a spot in the Champions League.
Calafiori recently shared a photo of himself on a private jet, heading to London for his medical examination with Arsenal.
Gunners’ manager, Mikel Arteta, is eager for him to join the squad quickly as they continue their pre-season tour across America.
In the snapshot posted by journalist Fabrizio Romano, Calafiori was seen traveling with his agents, including WSA Agency chairman Alessandro Lucci and CEO Alessio Ceccarelli.
A Valuable Addition
Calafiori’s arrival could be a significant boost for Arteta’s defense.
His versatility and depth are much-needed, as he has proven his worth playing both center-back and left-back for Bologna.
His contribution was pivotal in Bologna securing Champions League qualification for the first time since 1964-65.
So far, Arsenal’s only major signing this summer has been David Raya, who joined permanently from Brentford for £27 million after a loan spell last season.
Euro 2024 Highlights
Calafiori stood out in Italy’s Euro 2024 campaign, starting all three group-stage matches. After Italy’s elimination in the last-16 by Denmark, Calafiori enjoyed an extended summer break.
He has earned five caps for Italy, with three coming during the European Championship in Germany.
Basel’s Sell-On Clause
Basel, Calafiori’s former club, will benefit from a sell-on clause, receiving between 40 and 50 percent of the transfer fee.
This move might expedite Jakub Kiwior’s exit, with interest reportedly coming from both Milan clubs.
