The Paris Olympics opening ceremony has become the talk of the town, but not for the reasons you might expect. Twitter users are having a field day poking fun at the spectacle, which lasted an impressive four hours.
From smurfs to ‘woke’ performances and torrential rain, the event provided ample material for humor.
Social media has exploded with memes, many highlighting the ceremony’s more perplexing elements.
The rain-soaked crowd was seen donning plastic ponchos, and the performance itself has been labeled by some critics as the ‘worst ever.’
One particularly amusing tweet featured a stern-looking British Prime Minister with the caption, “You know what he’s thinking – this Opening Ceremony is very much a meeting that could have been an email.”
In contrast, many users reminisced about the London 2012 ceremony, especially Rowan Atkinson’s memorable one-note performance as Mr. Bean.
The London event has been hailed as the gold standard, making the Paris ceremony’s ‘woke’ yet ‘boring’ display look even more lackluster in comparison.
One user even joked that the first two hours of the mechanical horse act were the highlight of the show.
The Mechanical Horse and the Upside-Down Flag
Among the many oddities was a mechanical silver horse, which carried the Olympic flag down the River Seine towards the Eiffel Tower.
However, the flag was raised upside down at the Trocadero, which didn’t escape social media’s attention. Journalist Dan Wetzel tweeted, “Those who managed to stay awake during the Opening Ceremony were treated to the Olympic flag being flown upside down.”
Another fan quipped, “If you are having a bad day at work, it could be worse. You could be the flag team that hoisted the Olympic Flag upside down at the Opening Ceremony.”
The NBC Commentary and Missing Characters
NBC’s commentary did little to help, with one viewer noting that the tone suggested a baffled American perspective.
Meanwhile, one Twitter user lamented the absence of Remy from *Ratatouille*, joking, “Can’t believe the French haven’t paid homage to their greatest chef in the opening ceremony. Nothing about Remy, they’ve erased him from their history.”
A British Perspective
The British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer was spotted in the stands, but unlike others, he chose not to wear a poncho. Instead, he sported a raincoat, which many Brits took as a point of pride.
One user commented, “Our Prime Minister bringing his own cagoule to the Olympic opening ceremony so he doesn’t have to wear a silly poncho makes me proud to be British. We know how to do rain.”
Despite the rain and the ceremony’s mixed reviews, the internet found plenty of reasons to laugh and make light of the grand event.
