Shakira is set to be honored with the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award at the 2023 MTV VMAs in September. The Colombian pop star, aged 46, who has been rumored to be dating Louis Hamilton, will not only receive the prestigious award but will also perform at the event and is nominated for four Moon Person trophies. These nominations include Artist of the Year, Best Collaboration for the song “TQG” with Karol G, as well as Best Latin Song for both “TQG” and “Acróstico.”
The 2023 VMAs are scheduled to be broadcast live from the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, on September 12. Paramount’s president of music, Bruce Gilmer, mentioned in a press release, “Shakira is a true global force who continues to inspire and influence the masses with her unique, musical prowess. She’s a trailblazer for women around the world and one of the first artists to lead the globalization of Latin music.” He emphasized her impact on the music industry and expressed his belief in her continued success.
Shakira’s presence in the music scene dates back to the early 1990s, and she has produced numerous hit songs and vibrant music videos throughout her career, including tracks like “Hips Don’t Lie,” “Waka Waka (This Time for Africa),” “Chantaje,” “La Bicicleta,” “La La La (Brazil 2014),” and “Pero Fiel,” many of which have amassed over a billion views on YouTube.
The Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award has previously been awarded to iconic artists such as David Bowie, Madonna, Janet Jackson, Beyoncé, Justin Timberlake, Jennifer Lopez, and Pink. Notably, Shakira will become the first South American artist to receive this esteemed accolade. She had previously won VMAs for her videos and choreography, including “Ojos Asi,” “Hips Don’t Lie,” and her collaboration with Beyoncé on “Beautiful Liar.”
The VMAs will also feature performances from other artists including Demi Lovato, Karol G, Måneskin, and Stray Kids, with additional performers yet to be announced. Taylor Swift leads the nominations with eight nods, closely followed by SZA with six nominations. A diverse array of artists, including Doja Cat, Kim Petras, Miley Cyrus, Nicki Minaj, Olivia Rodrigo, Sam Smith, BLACKPINK, Diddy, and Shakira, each garnered multiple nominations. This year’s list of nominees also marks a record for the most first-time nominees, including Ice Spice, GloRIlla, Petras, and boygenius, among others.
