Despite experts warning of a high likelihood that he could engage in violent sexual offenses, SLD, the murderer of Courtney Morley-Clarke, will be released from prison. SLD, who became Australia’s youngest-ever murderer when he killed the three-year-old girl, is now 36 years old. Known to have psychopathic tendencies, he will be released under an extended supervision order (ESO), as ruled by Justice Stephen Campbell. SLD’s troubled upbringing included abuse from his drug-addicted mother and a subsequent entry into foster care.

SLD’s disturbing nature persisted into his adolescence, with psychiatric assessments indicating that he wouldn’t become a functional adult in society. At 13 years and 10 months old, he abducted Courtney Morley-Clarke from her home while she was sleeping, later found stabbed to death in a nearby area. Sentenced to 20 years in prison, his sentence expired in 2021, but his release was deemed too risky due to his dangerousness.

The recent assessment favored an ESO instead of more prison time, acknowledging the lack of rehabilitation prospects for SLD within the prison system. However, experts are skeptical that his release will lead to rehabilitation. Diagnosed with severe personality disorders, including psychopathy, SLD’s lack of empathy and preoccupation with sexual fantasies raise concerns for the safety of women around him.

Under the ESO, SLD will wear a GPS monitor and undergo surveillance at an offender support unit. This order is intended for offenders who pose a serious risk of violent, sexual, or terrorist crimes in the community. Despite the challenges of enforcing the order, Justice Campbell emphasized SLD’s right to be at liberty after his lawful sentence expires. SLD, who was temporarily returned to prison due to misconduct, may be allowed back into the support unit if he agrees to comply with the conditions.
