Whiskers’ Great Escape: Cat Wanders 10 Miles from Home, Trapped in Drainage Pipe

In a harrowing incident, a cat found itself in a perilous situation when it accidentally got its head trapped inside a drainage pipe, resembling what a passerby mistook as a “thick collar.”

The cat, named Lila, who is two years old, had ventured away from her home and ended up exploring a nearby building site in Gateshead, Tyne and Wear.

The owners of Lila became increasingly anxious when their beloved pet did not return home for an entire week.

Eventually, she was discovered ten miles away from her residence in Chester-le-Street, County Durham, with two pipe sections tightly wedged around her neck.

A compassionate individual residing nearby had been feeding Lila, genuinely believing that the cat was wearing a thick collar.

However, after realizing that the feline was in distress, they immediately contacted the RSPCA for assistance.

Inspector Ian Smith was dispatched to rescue Lila on July 11.

Reflecting on the rescue mission, Inspector Smith mentioned that it was an unusual situation initially, as they were unsure if the cat was a feral one.

The surprising revelation was that Lila had an owner who lived in Chester-le-Street, making her discovery in Gateshead all the more puzzling.

Lila had been missing for over a week, and during this time, she had been carrying the weight of the pipe sections uncomfortably around her neck.

Thankfully, her injuries were not severe, only consisting of a minor cut at the back of one of her legs and some swelling around her neck.

The RSPCA promptly took her to the veterinarian, and she was found to be in good health.

It is believed that she might have strayed into a builder’s yard, leading to her getting entangled with the drainage pipe parts.

In related news, a new law is set to take effect next June, mandating that cats must be microchipped before reaching 20 weeks of age.

This measure aims to enhance responsible pet ownership and help identify lost or injured cats more effectively.
