…By Jack Sylva for TDPel Media. Elder statesman and New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) chieftain, Buba Galadima, has expressed his disagreement with the method employed by President Bola Tinubu in removing fuel subsidy in the country.
Galadima believes that if he were in Tinubu’s position, he would have taken a different approach.
During an interview on Arise Television, Galadima stated that President Tinubu should have first investigated why and how the fuel subsidy kept accumulating and how it had brought Nigerians to the current level.
He also criticized the President’s advisers, stating that if he were in their shoes, he would have recommended removing the subsidy in a manner that wouldn’t cause hardship for Nigerians.
This would involve putting palliative measures in place before the subsidy removal.
Galadima expressed his viewpoint, saying, “If I were him (Tinubu), I could have done it differently.
I could have inquired why and how this fuel subsidy keeps accumulating and got us to this level where we are.
That is the difference.”
He further added, “And part of it would have been that if I were an adviser to the President, I could have advised him to take some measures so that the removal will not be painful with far-reaching effects on the social life of the country, especially for the ordinary man.”
Galadima highlighted the fact that subsidies do not benefit the poor, as they do not own cars or motorcycles.
Instead, it is the elites who benefit from the subsidy.
He emphasized the need to thoroughly investigate the subsidy and recover significant amounts of money.
While expressing his disagreement with Tinubu’s approach, Galadima also suggested alternative methods that would mitigate the negative impact of the subsidy removal on the lives of ordinary Nigerians.
