…By Roland Peterson for TDPel Media. Six people lost their lives in a tragic collision between a bakkie and a taxi on the R61 Road near Mthatha in the Eastern Cape on Saturday morning, 24 June.
The incident also resulted in injuries to seven additional individuals.
Out of the deceased, five were occupants of the bakkie, while one was from the taxi.
Prompt medical attention was provided to the injured passengers, who were swiftly transported to the hospital.
Cause of the Collision
According to Unathi Binqose, the spokesperson for Eastern Cape transport, the bakkie was on its way to a traditional ceremony in a nearby village when it collided with the stationary taxi.
The accident has left numerous families devastated, as the victims were all adult males, responsible for providing for their families and now leaving their children without fathers.
Road Safety Plea
In light of this tragic incident, Xolile Nqatha, the MEC for Transport in the Eastern Cape, issued a plea to all road users, particularly drivers, to exercise extreme caution on the roads.
The aim is to prevent avoidable accidents and spare families the pain and loss experienced as a result of such collisions.
