…By Roland Peterson for TDPel Media. The South African Police Service (SAPS) has recently released the crime statistics for the fourth quarter of the 2022/23 financial year, focusing on vehicle hijackings.

The data indicates a decrease in the number of incidents, with 5,119 cases reported compared to 5,608 in the previous quarter, marking a difference of 489 cases.

Regional Breakdown

Within the months of January 2023 to March 2023, Gauteng accounted for slightly over 50.2 percent of the country’s vehicle hijackings, with 2,573 incidents reported.

This number reflects an increase of 59 cases compared to the previous quarter spanning from October 2022 to December 2022.

Following Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal and Western Cape had 859 and 624 cases respectively.

Year-on-Year Comparison

Comparing the same period from January to March, a decline in car hijackings is evident when compared to the previous year.

In the corresponding quarter of the previous year, there were 5,402 reported cases, indicating a decrease of 283 incidents.

Safest Provinces

The provinces with the lowest number of reported car hijackings are the Northern Cape and the Free State, with only 11 and 69 cases respectively since the beginning of the year.

These figures show a slight decrease from the third quarter, during which 10 and 71 car hijackings were recorded in these provinces.

Truck Hijackings

In addition to vehicle hijackings, the SAPS also provided statistics on truck hijackings for the first three months of 2023.

The data reveals a 6.5 percent decrease in these incidents compared to the same period in the previous year.

Since the beginning of the year, 435 trucks have been hijacked, while the number stood at 465 during the same period last year.

Comparison with the Third Quarter

When comparing the data with the third quarter, a decrease in truck hijackings is evident.

The third quarter recorded a total of 492 cases, indicating a difference of 57 incidents.

Regional Breakdown

Gauteng remains the province with the highest number of truck hijackings, reporting 272 cases.

It is followed by Mpumalanga and the Eastern Cape, which reported 55 and 38 cases respectively.
