…By Joseph Benjamin for TDPel Media. A man was arrested at Buckingham Palace on Tuesday evening for allegedly throwing shotgun cartridges into the grounds.
The 59-year-old was also said to have had a knife, and was detained by police at around 7pm on suspicion of possession of an offensive weapon.
The incident is not currently believed to be terror-related.
Buckingham Palace went into lockdown during the incident, and police are now facing questions over security procedures after witnesses reported that the man placed a bag by the gates.
The contents of the bag included two passports, a mobile phone, a wallet, keys, a large brown letter, bank cards and a laptop case, as well as a photograph of a child and the book, The Happiness Advantage.
The incident did not involve the firing of any shots, and police have confirmed that there is no ongoing risk to the public.
The disturbance is being treated as an isolated mental health incident, and King Charles and Queen Consort Camilla were not at the palace at the time.
Witnesses have reported that the suspect had previously been seen shouting, “I’m going to kill the King,” and that he had visited the area over the past few nights, shouting the same phrase.
One neighbour of the suspect has expressed shock at the incident, saying that they would previously have “wouldn’t have a bad word to say about him”.
