The Free State police apprehended a 17-year-old suspect this week for allegedly attempting to rape a 58-year-old woman on a farm in the Smithfield area.
He later informed his mum of his actions.
Sergeant Martin Xuma of the South African Police Service (SAPS) said the 17-year-old allegedly woke the victim up on the night of Sunday, February 6 by attempting to rape her.
She managed to push the suspect away. The young boy ran away,” said Xuma.
According to the police, the boy allegedly confessed that he attempted to rape the woman to his mother.
A rape case was opened by the Xhariep District Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS) on Wednesday, 9 February, and the suspect was arrested on the same day. He was later released into his parents’ custody. The investigation continues.
The boy is expected to appear before the Smithfield Magistrate’s Court on charges related to the alleged attempted rape imminently.
“An appeal is made to the community to report any gender based violence immediately to the police so that crucial evidence can be collected on time where possible,” said Xuma
