The Red Berets argue that the socioeconomic conditions in South Africa offered “fertile ground” for the riots that erupted in response to former President Jacob Zuma’s arrest.
The EFF has accused the ANC of being to fault for the July Riots.
Furthermore, the EFF seemed pleased that the report echoed its own opinion that the blame for the unrest should be placed on the ‘incompetence of Ramaphosa’s government’.
“The report has given substance to observations the EFF had already drawn regarding the riots. Firstly, is that the ANC has become a menace to South African society and the key source of the July riots. In the words of the report, ‘factional battles in the African National Congress have become a serious source of instability in the country.’ The report also states that these ‘internal contradictions within the ANC are (also) impacting negatively on governance matters’. Meaning, the ANC has become incapable of governing South Africa.”
Party questions whether or not police knew about riots ahead of time
The EFF has pointed out that a key finding the nation had waited for was whether or not South African security structures had known about the riots ahead of time. The EFF also questioned if these structures had known in advance and simply failed to act upon them.
“A key question that the country needed to know is whether the President and or the Minister of Police knew about the planned riots and did nothing to stop them. This is important as it is the implication of the claims by erstwhile Minister of State Security Ayandla Dlodlo. In our observation, Ayanda Dlodlo misled the country about having provided intelligence products or information regarding the riots to the SAPS.”
In conclusion, the EFF has called un a public parliamentary inquiry into the ‘failure of intelligence services regarding the July riots’. Furthermore, the EFF wants all intelligence in relation to this matter to be declassified in order to establish if there had been any ‘intelligence work done and shared with relevant institutions.
