South African tennis player Lloyd Harris faced a tough match in the second round of Wimbledon against American 14th-seed Ben Shelton.
Despite his best efforts, Harris was unable to advance further in the tournament.
Harris, the only South African in the singles action at Wimbledon this year, had an exciting start to the tournament.
He won a nail-biting first-round match against American teenager Alex Michelsen, overcoming a two-set deficit to win 3-6, 4-6, 7-6 (7/5), 6-2, 7-6 (11/9).
Shelton also had a dramatic first-round match, defeating Italian qualifier Mattia Bellucci in five sets, 4-6, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.
This set the stage for a highly anticipated second-round clash between Harris and Shelton.
The second-round match between Harris and Shelton was a marathon, lasting three hours and 53 minutes.
Shelton emerged victorious with a scoreline of 4-6, 7-6 (7/5), 6-7 (7/5), 6-3, 7-6 (10/7).
It was the first time the two players had met at the ATP tour level.
Road to Wimbledon
Harris had to fight his way through three rounds of qualifying to earn his place in the main draw.
He defeated Italy’s Andrea Vavassori, Britain’s George Loffhagen, and France’s Hugo Grenier, showcasing his determination and skill.
Financial Rewards
Despite his second-round exit, Harris had a financially rewarding tournament.
He earned £40,000 (R935,000) for advancing through the qualifying rounds and an additional £93,000 (R2.16 million) for reaching the Round of 64.
This year’s performance matched his best Wimbledon result from 2021, where he also reached the second round.
