Ramaphosa announce intention to extend and improve R350 grant for the unemployed

President Cyril Ramaphosa has announced the government’s intention to extend and improve the R350 grant for the unemployed, emphasizing its positive impact during the State of the Nation Address (Sona).

The president expressed the government’s recognition of the grant’s benefits and pledged to enhance it further, marking a crucial step in providing income support for the unemployed.

Investment in the Future through Social Assistance

Ramaphosa highlighted that the government’s focus extends beyond a mere extension of the R350 Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant; there are plans for improvements, indicating a potential increase in financial allocation.

He emphasized that these grants and subsidies serve as more than just a means of livelihood, describing them as investments in the nation’s future.

Social assistance programs have demonstrated their positive impact on education, leading to increased school enrolment, attendance, lower drop-out rates, and improved pass rates.

SRD Grant’s Positive Impact on Quality of Life

Introduced during the COVID-19 pandemic, the SRD Grant currently reaches approximately 9 million unemployed individuals each month.

President Ramaphosa highlighted how the grant has significantly improved the quality of life for numerous South Africans, showcasing its effectiveness as a social safety net during challenging times.

Increasing Life Expectancy and Improving Healthcare

Ramaphosa shared encouraging statistics, stating that South Africans are now living longer than ever before, with life expectancy rising from 54 years in 2003 to 65 years in 2023.

The president attributed this progress to various healthcare initiatives and the positive impact of social assistance programs on the overall well-being of the population.

Decline in Maternal and Infant Deaths

The President also pointed out the substantial decline in maternal and infant deaths, attributing the improvement to the expansion of healthcare facilities, especially in impoverished areas.

The construction of more hospitals and clinics has played a crucial role in providing better-quality healthcare to a larger segment of the South African population.

Progress in HIV Awareness and Treatment

Highlighting advancements in healthcare, Ramaphosa noted that 95% of individuals diagnosed with HIV now know their status.

Additionally, 79% of those diagnosed receive antiretroviral treatment, with 93% achieving viral suppression.

The President emphasized the significant decline in new HIV infections among young people, showcasing progress in combating the epidemic.

President Ramaphosa’s announcements underscore the government’s commitment to social welfare, public health, and building a sustainable future for all South Africans.
