Two individuals, Lukman Ganiyu (28) and Ojo Oluwaseun (38), who professed to be herbalists, were apprehended by the Edo State Police Command in Nigeria for allegedly defrauding two women of a total of N876,000. The arrests were carried out on February 2nd, in the community of Ugbiyokho, located in the state capital, Benin, following reports from the victims that they were duped under the pretense of receiving spiritual aid.
The victims, identified as Mrs. Joy Akhiobare and Mrs. Ijeoma Blessing Kalu, sought assistance from the alleged herbalists in an attempt to salvage their failing businesses. According to reports, the suspects deceived the women into parting with N850,000 and N26,000 respectively. The duo purportedly used charms to intimidate the women, threatening them with death if they disclosed the fraudulent activity to anyone.
Public Admission of Fraud
In a surprising turn of events during an interview, Lukman Ganiyu, one of the suspects, confessed to defrauding the women. However, Ganiyu contested the reported sum, claiming that the total amount extorted was only N236,000. He alleged that one of the victims had approached him seeking help with her marital issues and subsequently introduced him to the second victim who was in search of a money ritual.
The State Police Command’s surveillance team, led by Command Spokesperson Chidi Nwabuzor, took swift action in response to the victims’ reports. The team managed to apprehend the suspects in Ugbiyokho, demonstrating their commitment to ensuring justice for victims of fraud within their jurisdiction.
