Nigeria Commences Strict Enforcement of Ban on Small-Sized Alcoholic Beverage Packaging

The Federal Government of Nigeria has taken decisive action in implementing a comprehensive ban on the importation, manufacturing, distribution, sale, and use of alcoholic beverages packaged in sachets, PET, and glass bottles of 200ml and below.

The Director-General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Prof Mojisola Adeyeye, confirmed this significant development during a press conference held in Abuja.

Enforcement and Deadline:

NAFDAC has rigorously commenced the enforcement of this ban following the expiration of the deadline given to manufacturers producing alcoholic beverages in sachets and PET bottles, which lapsed on January 31, 2024.

Prof Adeyeye emphasized that as of this date, no alcoholic beverage falling within these specified categories is registered by NAFDAC.

Nationwide Enforcement Actions:

To uphold the implementation of this policy, NAFDAC initiated nationwide enforcement actions on February 1, 2024.

The agency regards the disobedience to this policy as a serious violation of Nigerian laws and has expressed its commitment to utilizing all statutory means, potentially including prosecution, to address the matter.

Strict Measures and Accountability:

The Director-General conveyed a stern message, labeling the current situation as unacceptable.

NAFDAC is urging all holders of alcohol in sachets, PET, and glass bottles, along with empty sachets and bottles, to promptly report to the Investigation and Enforcement Directorate of NAFDAC.

The purpose is to surrender these banned products for destruction. Failure to comply may result in more severe measures, including legal prosecution.

Commentary:

The government’s move to ban small-sized alcoholic beverage packaging reflects its commitment to public health and safety.

NAFDAC’s proactive enforcement actions underscore the gravity of the situation.

The agency’s willingness to pursue legal measures emphasizes the strict stance against non-compliance.

This development will likely prompt a shift in the alcoholic beverage industry, leading to changes in packaging practices and compliance with regulatory standards.
